ECONOMY:
Oman's economy is based on petroleum, which accounts for 99% of its exports. Since 1970 when Sultan Qaboos came to power, the revenues of the state have been utilized to build roads, provide housing and electricity, expand irrigation, develop manufacturing and modernize the fishing industry. A majority of the population is engaged in subsistence farming though less than 1% of the land is currently under cultivation. Business: Men should wear suits and ties for business and formal occasions. English is usually spoken in business circles, but a few words or phrases of Arabic will be useful and welcome. Office hours: 0830-1300 and 1600-1900 Saturday to Wednesday; 0800-1300 Thursday. Many will also open 1600-1900 Saturday to Wednesday. Government office hours: 0730-1430 Saturday to Wednesday. All offices are closed Friday. Office hours open and close one hour later during Ramadan. |
